Wrobel JS, et al. Diabetes-Related Foot Care at Ten Veterans Affairs Medical Centers: Must Do’s Associated with Successful Microsystem. Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety. 2006;32(4): 206-213.

The microsystem model is a way of thinking about how care is delivered at the front line for a panel of patients. It is designed to improve patient navigation through available services. A useful analogy is the pilot’s preflight checklist. It is used to maximize the likelihood of success thereby freeing up the pilot to respond to more pressing issues. It is also designed so each step of the process can be measured through a simple patient survey.
